CSC 550: Master's Project / Thesis

Course
Description:
An individual study to demonstrate the ability to formulate, investigate and analyze a problem and to report results. Written report and oral presentation are required. Guidelines for completing this requirement are available in the CSC Computer Lab. Note: if the project is not completed during the initial four hour enrollment, you must register for one hour on an audit basis in all subsequent semesters (excluding summer) until the project is complete.

Prerequisites: Your project proposal should be complete and accepted by your committee before enrolling in CSC 550 for the first time.
Instructor: Responsibility for the course rotates each semester. Students should consult with their Project advisor regardless of who is the Instructor of record for the current semester.
Project Guidelines: The online CSC Graduate Project Guidelines provides an overview of the entire project from selecting a topic and advisor through final presentation.
Selecting
a Topic:

Identifying an appropriate topic is sometimes the most difficult part of research. Select a topic that draws upon your interests and knowledge acquired while completing graduate work at UIS. Talk with the CSC faculty about their interests and your ideas. If you find a match, ask the faculty member to be your Project Advisor. You may want to visit the Brookens Library Archive located in the basement to review previous Master's projects. We also have a few abstracts of recent projects on this web site.

The university library maintains a list of all graduate projects.

Here are some of the research interests of the CSC faculty:

  • Keith Miller: Software Engineering, Computer Ethics
  • Ted Mims: Parallel Processing, Networks, Operating Systems
Meeting Times: There are no official meeting times for this course. Work with your Project Advisor to determine how often the two of you should meet.
Recommend Text:

K Houp and T. Pearsall, Reporting Technical Information 7th ed., New York: Macmillan Publishing, 1992.

Note: This text is not required but is a useful reference when writing your final report. This book is on permanent reserve at the Center for Teaching and Learning (BRK 460). Other technical writing books can be just as useful.

Grading:
First semester enrollment for CSC 550 is on a CR/NC basis. If you do not complete your project during the first semester then you will receive an 'R' until the work is completed. Subsequent semesters are taken on an audit basis only.
