CSC 470A Routing Configuration in a WAN Environment Instructor: Dr. Ted Mims, email: mims.ted@uis.edu Catalog Description: The course will include the final two semesters of web-based materials included in the four semester sequence of the Cisco Networking Academy. Emphasis will be placed on configuring routers to operate in a secure WAN environment. Students will collect and analyze data they will use to optimize the management of a WAN. Purpose of and Rationale for the Course: The course is designed to prepare computer science majors for entry into the level positions in the field of network administration. The curriculum is on-line and covers concepts related to designing, implementing and managing a secure Wide Area Network. In addition to reviewing the materials presented in the on-line format students will gain hands-on experience configuring routers and switches for a hypothetical WAN. Activities for the students will include configuring a firewall for a secure network, testing the network, collecting data and using the data to optimized the performance of the network. As a Cisco Regional Networking Academy we received a grant that included five routers and two switches that will be available in addition to simulators for the students to use in a laboratory. This course is the second in a sequence the first course is CSC 483 and covers the fundamentals of networks and Local Area Networks (LANs). Educational Objectives: To properly prepare our graduates with the fundamental background and knowledge required to manage a Wide Area Network. This will include covering the topics related to WAN management using a web based curriculum developed by Cisco and provide students with access to equipment including routers and switches that are uses to manage a secure WAN. Outline of Topics to be Covered:
